Background
NorthWinds Biodiesel’s primary objective is to develop, construct, and operate destination-based biodiesel production facilities in order to meet the growing demand for premium biodiesel fuel in the Northeastern United States.
NorthWinds Biodiesel (NWB) is a joint venture company between NorthWinds Renewables (NWR) and Safe Harbour Chartering, Inc. (SHC). NWB’s primary objective is to develop, construct, own and operate destination-based (i.e., located in demand centers versus feedstock supply centers) biodiesel production facilities in order to meet the growing demand in the Northeast for premium biodiesel fuel. To accomplish this, NWB is developing production plants at multiple locations to ensure its ability to implement a regionally coordinated strategy to optimize and leverage feedstock supplies, freight logistics, operating capabilities and the customer markets it serves. SHC will act as primary feedstock purchasing agent and will be responsible for sourcing and transporting all project feedstock supplies to the facilities.
NWB has been involved in biodiesel development since early 2006, during which time the Company has focused on team building, site selection and layouts, engineering and design, permitting, legal, and other required activities at sites throughout the Northeast. Two project companies, Berkshire Biodiesel and CT Biodiesel, were established to manage its development efforts in Massachusetts and Connecticut, respectively.
The NWB management team is comprised of experienced renewable energy professionals and engineers with extensive finance, project development, project design and engineering, transportation logistics and feedstock procurement expertise. At the project level, the facility management team will be supported by well-established, locally based co-development partners and technical teams uniquely qualified to contribute to the successful and timely development of each facility.
The primary customers within NWB's markets will be wholesalers, regional distributors, municipalities, commercial entities, institutions, independent power generators, utilities and industries.
NWB facilities will be multi-feedstock facilities, which will incorporate pre-processing systems in order to process a wide variety of feedstocks including refined and crude degummed vegetables oils, animal fats, second generation oils such as algae or castor and used vegetable oil, known as waste vegetable oils and yellow grease.
NWB, through its team of engineers, has established a standardized processing system design that will be applied to NWB projects in order to enhance economies of scale and reduce operations and maintenance variability. In addition, NWB projects will incorporate a standard feedstock and product bulk storage system that will provide higher than normal storage capacity for NWB projects in order to reduce rail and water logistics risks. NWB’s mission is to build and operate the safest and most technologically advanced biodiesel facilities in the United States.
