PROJECTS
Our most advanced development efforts are Berkshire Biodiesel, located in Western Massachusetts and CT Biodiesel, located in central Connecticut which in aggregate represent 100 million gallons per year of production.
Berkshire Biodiesel (BBD) is a 50 million gallon per year production facility located in Pittsfield, MA on approximately 9 acres of land adjacent to a CSX mainline rail. The plant is located on an industrial complex owned by Crane & Co. that straddles the City of Pittsfield and the Town of Dalton. BBD has entered into an eighteen month lease option agreement with Crane & Co. for the long-term lease of the project site, which includes vacant land and use of a large unused manufacturing building with offices and testing facilities. Construction is expected to commence in early fall of 2007, with operations beginning late 2008.
The City of Pittsfield and the Town of Dalton and several other local and regional agencies have shown extremely strong support of the project. In addition, BBD has submitted several applications to state and local agencies with grant funding in order to offset rail siding and other expenditures.
NorthWinds has entered into a joint venture with Tychon Energy Systems, LLC (Tychon) to develop CT Biodiesel (CTB), a 50 million gallon per year production facility. CTB is located on a 17.75-acre parcel of undeveloped, construction-ready property in the New England Business Center Development located in Suffield, CT just outside of Hartford. Tychon has secured a purchase option for the project site. To the greatest extent feasible, NWB will rely upon the core technical team assembled for the BBD project to design, develop, finance and construct CTB.
At the CTB site, extensive preliminary engineering, mapping and environmental work has been previously completed and made available to CTB. This work includes: rail spur design, geotechnical borings, soils analysis, site grading study, property survey, wetlands delineation, site utilities layout, storage tank layout, building placement, roadway and parking area design, storm and sanitary system layout and site landscaping design. The availability of this information and past working experience between these firms will help reduce the overall development time, risk and cost. The Suffield Economic Development Division has shown strong support for the project and has provided valuable technical assistance.
CTB is expected to also be operational by late 2008.
